Print is an evolving media.

One hundred years ago, print was essentially a paper media.  Fifty years ago, electronic words appeared on cathode ray tubes.  Now, billions of words and millions of images are engendered each day that will never touch paper.

We probably will never have a "paperless society."  Paper is becoming less popular, but is not likely to become passé - at least not in the foreseeable future.  Print on paper may not be as economical or environmentally friendly as electronic print, but it has the advantages of durability and global availability.

And, though print on paper will be around awhile, electronic print media is now making a great leap forward with texting and pictures on cell phones and similar personal communications devices.  Several million people each day consume terabytes of bandwidth to tweet and text and transfer images, mostly for transitory, person-to-person conversations.  Also, electronic books, like the Sony® Reader, Amazon Kindle, and HP® Mini Netbook make accessibility to all kinds of content - literature, the daily news, music - almost instant.  With wireless services quickly becoming universal, the e-book may have as much impact on the world as Gutenberg's printing press.

As a media, these devices and the networks that support them are fast becoming the standard for personal communications, but they do have limitations for business; especially business purposes that require comprehensive, coherent, and full color detail.  Business formatted print communications, whether on paper, computer, or internet media, has the advantage of providing a detailed presentation with all the diverse content elements assembled into a coherent format  - text and pictures that provide a complete story.

At this time, portable electronic print display devices are useable only where there is compatible wireless service
(1) and some are small with limited viewing screens and some lack the ability to display color.  That technological advances will soon resolve these limitations is assumed, but new media technology requires not only retooling hardware and software, it also demands rethinking the way business communicates with clients, prospects, and personnel.
